Crash and Burn | Nissan Tsuru Mexico vs Nissan Versa USA

Common logic dictates that all things being equal, a competition between two participants should produce similar results. Now take this logic to the cars industry. Safety is one of the most important parameters when comparing cars. So it follows naturally that the cheapest car in one market should at least be equal to minimum safety requirements of cheapest car in another market. After all, human life has to be valued similarly everywhere, right?

Wrong.

Nissan, one of the most decorated car brands in the world, makes Versa in USA and Tsuru in Mexico, both being the least expensive sedan in their respective markets. But the safety parameters used in both are vastly different as proved in a recent shocking car-to-car test. This crashworthiness test has been conducted by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and backed by Latin NCAP as well as Global NCAP as part of global #NoZeroStarCars campaign.

In the 50% overlap tap crash test, both vehicles can be seen travelling at 40 mph (64 km/h) before crashing. While Versa is equipped with front and side airbags in a modern structural design, Tsuru has absolutely nothing to protect itself. Result- Versa’s dummy driver is cushioned, its safety cage holds well, passenger compartment remains mostly untouched meaning that the driver can get out of this situation with cuts, bruises and maybe a dislocated shoulder. On the other hand, Tsuru's A-pillar is heavily deformed, practically the whole front passenger compartment is obliterated and the dummy driver’s body contorts in an impossible position showing exactly how a real driver would be dead in a matter of seconds in a similar situation.

Tsuru, a basic boxy car, started its life as Sentra in USA and picked up steam in Mexico through the 1990s and 2000s due to solid looks and low-cost investment plus maintenance, claiming majority stake in Mexico’s taxi fleet, even with a zero-star safety rating. However, over the years, it has been accused of having the highest fatality score among all the vehicles on Mexico’s roads, including more than 4000 deaths between 2007 and 2012. The crash test was conducted specifically to prove just how unsafe the very popular Tsuru is.

The hair-raising car-to-car test has brought into focus burning questions – should a company be allowed to go scot-free when they knowingly skip on essential security features just to produce cheaper cars? More importantly, the companies are taking advantage of different respect for safety parameters in different markets. In such a case, shouldn’t it be the duty of the government to step in and ensure safety of its citizens, by making it mandatory for every company to at least adhere to UN or equivalent standards for safety? After all, if a Versa costing $178 900 Mexican Pesos can adhere to robust security standards, what is stopping Tsuru costing $142 600 Mexican pesos from increasing its crashworthiness quotient?

At least one good thing has come out of this car-to-car test – Nissan has decided to cease the production of Tsuru model from March 2017. Bye-bye coffin on wheels!

Luminous First Look of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in Beauty & The Beast | Hollywood Diaries

Beauty and the Beast is one of the most beloved children’s fairy tales of all times. Disney’s animated movie ‘Beauty and the Beast’ became an instant classic when it was released in 1991, even getting nominated for a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, which is extremely rare for movies in animation genre. It is a story of hope and love through the life of beautiful and intelligent Belle who is forced to live with a beast in his castle. How her friendly disposition and never-give-up attitude helps her find out the truth about kind, tortured prince residing within the beast forms the crux of this much-celebrated story.

It is no wonder that people have been waiting with bated breath for its live-action reboot slated to be released on March 17, 2017. A great cast comprising of Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere the candelabra, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth the clock, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts the teapot and Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza the harpsichord is supporting Emma Watson (of Harry Potter’s Hermione fame) as Belle and Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) as the titular Beast.

While the shooting has been successfully kept under wraps, the first look at Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as Belle and Beast, as revealed on the cover of newest issue of Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, has rightfully given rise to an internet sensation. They have re-created an iconic scene from the original movie where Belle falls in love with the Beast after a romantic waltz through the majestic ballroom in the castle.

Luminous First Look of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in Beauty & The Beast

Everybody had been wondering if Emma Watson and Dan Stevens would be able to play the roles of Belle and Beast with the required amount of chemistry between them. This cover of theirs as a couple has lain to rest all fears of them possibly being a mismatched couple. Belle is popular as the most bookish of all Disney princesses and as such, Emma Watson who played the bookish Hermione to perfection in Harry Potter franchise, is the perfectly luminous Belle. Dan Stevens is recognized as an object for teenage crush and his turn as a beast with some fantastic CG effects is going to be equal parts scary and riveting.

Much of the fluttering of hearts has been caused by the characters’ costumes as revealed in their first look as Belle and Beast. While recreating the original scene, we can see that care has been taken to keep the costumes as close to their original illustrated versions as possible. Belle wears an iconic voluminous yellow gown with matching gloves, made dramatic with an off-the-shoulder neckline in the original version and here Emma Watson looks the quintessential Belle with classic princess buttercup-shaded yellow gown.

It looks silky and feathery light which is an effect achieved by layers rather than a traditional corset. Emma Watson brings a modern interpretation to Belle as a highly independent character and her costumes in the movie showcase her active lifestyle sans the restricting impediments of Victorian era dress codes. Similarly, Dan Stevens as Beast is dressed up in instantly recognizable navy frock coat with gold embroidery that presents the appropriately regal look.

The world can’t get wait to see what other riches Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as Belle and Beast have prepared for us in coming days and months.

Antique Doll Collection | Hobby And So Much More!

Antique Doll Collection is one of the most popular hobbies. Yet, many people cannot fathom how dolls can be ever considered something worthy of collection because they look at dolls only as a toy which needs to be discarded after kids grow up. I have seen this first hand as a neighbor of ours (when I was a kid) used to keep a doll collection and I distinctly remember everyone in our neighborhood regarding him as cuckoo! However, just a couple of weeks ago, I came across him on a social media channel, participating in an international doll show as a sort of expert! That made me want to delve deep into this world and know more about it :)

Antique Doll Collection

Antique Doll Collection is a popular hobby which is not restricted to any particular group. Teenagers, businessmen, women, old people, basically people of all ages and genders have this hobby all around the world. They do not collect dolls only as an object of their fascination or reminder of their childhood; rather many of them are serious students of history of arts, sculptures and costuming as depicted through dolls of different eras. They can differentiate between the various kinds of antique dolls, from French Bisques to German Bisques, from Kewpies to Porcelain, from Madame Alexander to Boudoir!

It is a myth that Antique Doll Collection is a hobby reserved for the rich alone since there are many ways doll collectors can get rare vintage pieces at down to earth prices, such as at auctions or online portals such as eBay.

Another misconception is that only eccentric people or social misfits indulge in this hobby. Nothing could be further from truth! There are numerous doll forums, local clubs, doll shows and conventions where doll collectors meet up. These occasions are also a great way to showcase one’s own doll collections.

It is not true that all dolls are collected only for them to be sold off later at a higher price. But yes, in general, many dolls do increase in value after some time at which point their owners can definitely make a little fortune by selling them. For e.g. some dolls can be sold for as high as $3000 at auction even though they were bought for as low as 100$ some decades ago.

Antique Doll Collection is not a hobby to be undertaken lightly because upkeep of an antique doll takes a lot of effort. It needs to be cleaned regularly, preserved at the right temperature in right surroundings and protected from damage via pets, harsh lights, bugs, chemicals and so on. But for those who love antique dolls, it is definitely a very emotionally rewarding one.
